On July 12th, Tom Homan was cross-examined by multiple politicians at a House Oversight hearing on immigration. Many explosive moments were caught on tape and were in various video clips and articles.

One such exchange between OH Congressman Jim Jordan and Tom Homan was quite interesting, and some facts were laid out by Mr. Homan, the former ICE director.

Some great points made by Tom and Jim in the video are laid out below:

When someone is prosecuted for a crime, the child can’t go to jail with the parent. It happens to American families every day. Illegal immigrants are breaking the law so this is no different.

Jim Jordan asserts that people may not like this, but it’s the law. “If we don’t like the law, last time I checked, it’s the folks sitting up here who gotta change it”

Tom Homan has offered three changes to the law that he believes would help the situation of illegal immigration and the detention of immigrants at the border.

  1. “If we close the loopholes in the TVPRA where children of Central America are treated the same as Children of Mexico”
  2. “If we would change the Flores Settlement Agreement so we can actually detain families and families sitting long enough to see a judge to plead their case”
  3. If we can change the rules of asylum so it makes more sense, so 90% of the people don’t pass up their chance to see a judge”

Jim Jordan goes on to say “those three things go to the heart of the matter, do they not?”

Tom Homan said it comes down to the incentives that cause people to come here illegally to begin with, including many liberal talking points such as abolishing ICE, free education for illegal immigrants, no detention centers, free medical care, citizenship for illegal immigrants, “protection from ICE”, sanctuary cities.

Jim Jordan states: “Those kinds of statements made by Democrats in the United States Congress who are in positions of influence in this country, they have an impact don’t they?”

All these talking points highlighted here and in the video may lead one to wonder if the Democrats want to fix illegal immigration (read more on illegal immigration here) or if they like using it for political leverage instead. Unfortunately some in both parties but seemingly more often on the left, like to use hot button topics to garner attention and votes for their side, rather than doing what’s right for the American people.
