GOP Senators Push Gun Control Ahead of 2018 Primary Elections

As the left seizes upon another tragedy, lobbying for gun control following the massacre of 17 students and teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, Republican Senators in the Florida State Senate have caved to pressure from mainstream media and a vocal group of gun grabbers, and turned their backs on not only their constituents, but the Constitution of the United States.

A total of 6 Republican Senators, Jeff Brandes, Rob Bradley, Anitere Flores (who had an affair with a Democrat Senator), Keith Perry, Wilton Simpson, and Lizbeth Benacquisto, have voted to put forward a bill that would further restrict the gun rights of American citizens, while amongst other things, raising the age of purchase for all firearms to 21. Senate Bill 7026, dubbed the ‘Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act,’ will now be sent to the Senate Appropriations Committee. According to these Senators, 18-year-olds are responsible enough to give them their votes, register for the draft and volunteer for military service, pay taxes, and be tried as an adult in a court of law, but not legally and lawfully purchase a firearm. In other words, all constitutional rights apply to some, but some do not apply to all.

According to the text of the bill, it is in the interest of ‘public safety’ to restrict Americans’ constitutional right to bear arms, so long as that American is under the age of 21. As we already know, raising the age of purchase has absolutely no effect on public safety. Americans are 20 times more likely to be killed with a handgun than a rifle, despite a long-standing age limit on the purchase of handguns. If lawmakers expect age restrictions on automatic rifles to be effective, then it is clear that they have never followed up on previous legislation.

In addition to raising the age of purchase to 21, bump stocks will be banned, and a 3-day waiting period for the purchase of firearms will be enacted, directly impacting the safety of Americans seeking a firearm for self-defense. In effect, members of the Florida State Senate have told the people of their state that regardless of the urgency of a situation, their ability to defend themselves from one seeking to do them harm must be curtailed. Unfortunately, there will be no 3-day waiting period on the black market, and criminals will be able to obtain guns on demand, just as they already do.

On Facebook, Senator Keith Perry posted at length about the bill, which instead of merely protecting schools, attacks the rights of the general public. Senator Perry cited his meeting with students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, who have been turned to anti-gun activists by left-wing opportunists, as an inspiration for his support for wide-reaching gun control legislation. Ironically, Senator Perry seems to believe that those under the age of 21 are responsible enough to provide him with legal advice, but not own a firearm.
