Recently there has been a wave of Republican states, many in the southeast portion of the country, moving to nearly ban outright, or severely restrict abortion. This puts pressure on other Republican-controlled states to follow suit.
A bill was recently in consideration in the sunshine state but unfortunately for Conservative Republicans, it did not get through. Governor Ron DeSantis has been relatively quiet about getting something new in the works thus far, although he has succeeded in passing other conservative legislation since taking office earlier this year.
FETAL HEARTBEAT ABORTION (FAILED): Blocks physicians from performing abortions if fetal heartbeats have been detected. Would lead to third-degree felony charges for any “person who knowingly or purposefully performs or induces an abortion on a pregnant woman with the specific intent of causing or abetting the termination of the life of an unborn human being whose fetal heartbeat has been detected.’ (HB 235 / SB 792)
In fact, state representative Mike Hill seems to be the “lone soldier” currently fighting to push the pro-life narrative that so many other red states are pushing, which is creating the potential for a Supreme Court ruling down the road. From the article linked in this paragraph Mike Hill lays out his plan and reasoning for his convictions:
“Hill said that he was at an anti-abortion rally a few weeks ago in Pensacola and while the keynote speaker was delivering a speech, God spoke to him.
“As plain as day, God spoke to me,” Hill said. “He said that wasn’t my bill, talking about the heartbeat detection bill that I filed. He said that wasn’t my bill. I knew immediately what he was talking about. He said, you remove those exceptions and you file it again. And I said yes Lord, I will. It’s coming back. It’s coming back. We are going to file that bill without any exceptions just like what we saw passed in Alabama.”
The group of close to 20 people in the room applauded and cheered Hill’s remarks.”
As recently as yesterday, the Florida lawmaker has stated he would like to model his new bill as close as possible to the pro-life bill recently signed by the Governor of Alabama. Mike Hill is taking bold steps to move things forwards with seemingly little to no support from his colleagues.
It’s a surprise more people in Florida’s Republican legislature are not jumping on the bandwagon with Rep. Hill but maybe this will change soon. He has indeed picked up the attention of some angry Democrats though, exampled by a Tweet from failed Gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum.
Referencing the PNJ.com article cited earlier Andrew Gillum Tweets: “And we will fight you every step of the way, Mr. Hill”

Mike Hill responded promptly to Andrew Gillum’s cry with a Tweet of his own: “And you will lose…. Again! You fight against The Living God at your own peril.”

Another Tweet from liberal Democrat state house Rep. Anna Eskamani shows further unhappiness with Mike Hill’s stand.
“Florida politicians should know better than to give this bill a hearing in our State Capitol. We’ll be there in the thousands to protest. #STOPTHEBANS”

Rep. Hill has been a stalwart conservative on other controversial topics in recent history as well, such as standing up for protecting all historical monuments including but not limited to Confederate monuments. It will be interesting to see where his pro-life ideas land and ultimately how far this rising star goes.
See video below from December of 2018 where Hill speaks about historical monument issues. This is something other red states have had success lately with as well such as Georgia, with the exception of Texas, where things with monument protection seem to be in limbo due to lukewarm Republican leaders.
