Officers and Reporters Injured in Memphis Anti-Police Protests

Wednesday night, protests erupted in the Frayser community of Memphis, Tennessee after a fugitive, Brandon Webber, was shot and killed by US Marshalls, who were trying to apprehend the dangerous suspect. Despite the fact that the local police force had nothing to do with the situation, the local community took to the streets in protest.

The protests resulted in 36 officers being injured, as well as two reporters. A total of 23 vehicles from different police forces and agencies were also damaged during the melee.  There have only been three arrests announced so far.

One of the reporters injured was Luke Jones, who works for the local CBS-affiliated WREG News Channel 3.  He took to Twitter to document the incident, which apparently involved him being knocked “to the ground”.

Afterward, he Tweeted that he was treated at the hospital for a contusion and thanked his followers for their well wishes.

This continues the unfortunate trend of reporters being injured during anti-police protests.

One journalist, Eder Campuzano, from the “Oregonlive.com” article linked above was quoted saying:

“I stay on the perimeter of the action. I keep in sight of a clear exit from the crowd. And I follow police orders to the best of my ability, a cautionary reminder editors impart when we meet to prepare for an event like this.”

Already, a local media outlet has dropped a story with the headline, ‘Why people rioted in Frayser last night‘.  According to the author, “The shooting of young black men by police officers has become a national crisis”.

It is unfortunate that there is no national crisis mentioned regarding the shootings of young children by dangerous criminals like Webber.  One of the suspects in that murder was even given bond at the end of last year but still no protests.
