Riggleman was voted into the position in 2018 replacing Thomas Garrett who left the position to seek help for alcoholism.

Riggleman, an owner of a distillery in Nelson County, decided to run for the position after failing to get on the ballot in the Virginia governor’s race of 2017.

The same-sex marriage officiated by Riggleman was of two of his volunteers from his 2018 campaign. Riggleman’s 2018 campaign had some controversy brought up by Leslie Cockburn regarding bigfoot erotica which Riggleman largely laughed off as just a big joke.

In his freshman year, he has also called for President Trump to get off Twitter in a tweet.

@RepRiggleman tweeted:

.@ABC13News asked me about the President’s tweets about Senator John McCain.
“John McCain is a war hero…this is a man who served our country for a long time. So my advice to him would be to get off twitter and stop talking about the late Senator.”

In a statement to The Washington Post on presiding at the same-sex wedding, Riggleman states “My real belief is that government shouldn’t be involved in marriage at all, but if it is, everybody has to be treated equally before the law, and that is part of our Republican creed. And it also comes down to love is love. I’m happy to join two people together who obviously love each other.”
